Relocation Transition Tips

by HJI Author

You are moving to a new city, starting a new job, and, essentially, building a new life. While all this comes with exciting possibilities, it’s also a scary time with a lot of unknowns. Don’t try to go it alone—follow some easy relocation transition tips to help you ease into your new neighborhood.

Relocation transition tips to ease transition

  1. Ask for financial assistance.

A relocation package often includes financial help for moving expenses, temporary housing costs, travel expenses, and more. It can come in the form of a lump sum or reimbursement. If your company offered a relocation package, you can try to negotiate it higher. Calculate the potential cost of your move and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. If your employer did not offer a package, ask for one. Consult with your potential new boss and your HR representative to see what your options may be.

If certain financial burdens are lifted, you can focus on doing well in your position and creating a life in your new community.

  1. Lean on your company for more support.

If you’re moving for a job, see what non-financial relocation support your new company offers. Some employers work with outside consulting firms that focus on helping individuals and families transition to a new city. They might be able to help you find housing (temporary, rental, or permanent), value and sell your current home, counsel your spouse and family on the move, and even offer concierge services. It’s very stressful to try to manage a move, new professional responsibilities, and living in a new location. Reach out for help whenever possible.

  1. Join clubs or groups.

Once you’ve got the financial and logistical considerations figured out, it’s time to start creating a social life in your new community. It can be daunting trying to make new friends, whether you’re 25 or 55. Use sites like Meetup.com and Facebook to find local groups that fit your interests. Perhaps you can join a running club or a playgroup if you’re a parent.

  1. Reconnect with old friends.

Do you know anyone in the location you’re moving to? Perhaps you can reconnect with old acquaintances in the area. Social media makes it easy to reach out to someone you haven’t seen in a while. Having a familiar face in your new neighborhood can help ease some of the loneliness that comes with relocating. Also, make regular appointments to call or video chat with old friends in your former city.

  1. Join a local Facebook group and/or dating website.

Chances are, your new community has a bevy of local Facebook groups. Residents will discuss local concerns, promote nearby businesses, and advertise upcoming events—it’s a great chance to get involved in the community. Single folks might consider signing up for a dating app as well. Even if you’re not interested in a romantic partner, going on dates is an easy way to get to know new people and discover what to do in your area.

  1. Connect with your new colleagues.

Last but not least, get to know the people you are now working with. Don’t be shy about asking for information about the city, going to lunch with co-workers, and attending happy hours. The sooner you start making connections, the more comfortable you’ll feel.
