The Diversity Workshop at Glendale’s Pacific Community Center

by hjiadmin

The racial makeup of the United States is and always has been rapidly changing. California has the privilege of being diversely populated, and if current trends continue, this diversity will only increase. As such, many families have recognized the importance of teaching their children about diversity. From early on, kids benignly notice skin color, hair textures, and physical ability. Sadly, as they grow older, these innocent observations become tied to social conditioning, and as a result, cliques, isolation and bullying often occurs. At the same time, the ability to embrace others unlike ourselves is essential to being progressive citizens and successful professionals. Luckily for Glendale, the Pacific Community Center wants to support families and teens through navigating this hot topic at its Diversity Workshop!

On Friday, April 28th, the center is opening its doors from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM for a free Diversity Workshop. Youth ages thirteen to seventeen will experience an open dialogue about their experiences around difference. Each participant will get the opportunity to learn from others, as well as teach others. The event will start off with an icebreaker activity in order to help build a supportive environment. All in all, young people will leave with a better idea of how to express themselves around this sensitive but important subject.

Even more, the workshop is part of the California Friday Night Live Partnership. In their own words, this initiative strives to “build partnerships for positive and healthy youth development, which engage youth as active leaders and resources in their community.” Through community service, social action activities, participation in environmental advocacy, and promotion of health policy, high school-aged people learn to view themselves as empowered and strive to make change in the world around them. Through the Diversity Workshop, Glendale’s teens get a chance to take part in this encouraging program right in their own town!

The Diversity Workshop is taking place at Pacific Community Center, which is located at 501 South Pacific Avenue, Glendale, California 91204. For directions, the event flyer and more, visit the event’s web page or feel free to contact Jackie Baliton at 818-548-4098.
