Should You Consider Temporary Housing When Relocating?

by HJI Author

Whether you’re uprooting just yourself, or your whole family, relocating to a new area for a job can be stressful, especially when you don’t have your housing situation completely under control. Of course, it would be great to sell your house and immediately move into the perfect place in your new city. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work out like that for many people. In those circumstances, you may want to consider temporary housing when relocating to a new city.

When would I choose temporary housing?

There are a few situations that would warrant the need for temporary housing:

  • There is lag time between closing on your old home and closing on your new home
  • You are waiting for your furniture and possessions to arrive
  • You’re only in the city for a temporary assignment
  • You want to try out the new area for a while before committing to a house or long-term rental
  • You’re not sure what neighborhood you want to live in
  • You’re still looking for your dream house or apartment
  • Construction isn’t done on your new home

Depending on your unique circumstances, you should decide what works best for you and your family. Your new company can help you make some of these big decisions and offer assistance.

Temporary housing options

You are going to need to choose temporary housing that works best for your unique situation. You’ll need to consider how long you need to stay, how many people you need to accommodate, and what amenities are necessary. For example, do you value a close commute to the new job or being close to restaurants and dining? Do you want high-end finishings and access to a pool and spa?

Here are a few options to think about:

  • Hotel—a good choice if you need a place to stay for less than a week. You won’t have to worry about bringing anything but clothes and a toothbrush, and you’ll have access to the hotel’s amenities plus daily room cleaning.
  • Extended stay hotel—these hotels offer discounts based on how long you stay. Extended stay hotels are good options when you need to stay for two or less months.
  • Airbnb—if you need to stay for a couple of months, but don’t want a hotel, try Airbnb or another vacation rental service. You’ll usually get a fairly good deal on a furnished living space.
  • Corporate housing—whether your company offers corporate housing (for example, they may own a condo for relocated and traveling employees near the office) or you rent from a corporate housing company, these are usually furnished apartments or houses that are good to rent for a few months.
  • Short-term lease—you may choose to rent an apartment for six months or less. This can be a less expensive option (especially if your company helps you out), but it may mean bringing your own furniture.
