Tips for Moving Across the US

by HJI Author

It all starts with a checklist

We’ve heard the story so many times. When you get a big promotion or an important new job, or if a family member needs your help locally, you have to pack everything up and move. But it’s not just any move; you’re moving across the US! From west to east and north to south, there are many reasons you could be packing up your life and belongings and heading to a new coast. If you’re heading to the Los Angeles area, packing up your life and relocating has never been easier than with GlobalPoint Relocation.

But no matter where you’re moving, when there are thousands of miles to cross and many things to be done, you’d better start with a checklist.

A moving checklist can be as detailed or as basic as you like, but there have to be several sections. First, make sure you have a section for the actual packing of the belongings. This will include downsizing, inventories, and a list for each room or section of your home. Next, there needs to be a section on travel. How are you getting across the country? How are your belongings getting across the country? If you’re driving, where are you staying overnight? How much will you budget for gas? Last but not least, you’ll need a section of action items for when you arrive in your new city and your new home.

Things to do before you move across the US

Before you make the big move across the country, make sure you’re cognizant of the following:

  • Compare the cost of living from your current city and where you are relocating.
  • To calculate moving costs, make sure you get several price comparisons. Some movers will charge more than others, especially if they are also packing your stuff.
  • Make sure you do a home inventory, several times over. Go through all of your belongings and ask: Keep, Discard, Donate, or Sell?
  • Pack light, pack right. Learn how best to pack your valuables, clothes, and electronics. Find out what kind of moving van or truck will be transporting everything, or if you will ship.
  • Know whether you’re flying or driving across the country. The transition can be slower with a car, but you’ll have a vehicle in your new home. Pets, children, and elderly relatives that might be joining you are also a consideration in your travel plans.
  • Make sure you know how to pack, move, and relocate safely. There’s a smart way to do everything, and that will make your move go much more smoothly.
